Hospitals Fail to Report MRSA Infections
'Superbug' Spreading, But Statistics About it Aren'tHospitals in most states are failing to track infection rates of a deadly bacteria known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In Texas, hospitals defend themselves from suits brought due to infections by refusing to turn over documents related to infection control. By claiming the documents are privileged due to "peer review" hospitals can legally refuse requests to produce evidence which would support a claim of malpractice. Plus, hospitals are reluctant to report infection rates because they fear it will drive patients away to other facilities. Alexis Grant, Houston Chronicle 10/30/2007

Doctor Accused of Medical Malpractice Disappears
While not common, some of the often-sued doctors in this country have decided to quit practicing and retire with their money. In Dr. Normann's case, it appears he has decided to fall off the face of the planet - or practice medicine in Texas. In the wake of 2003 "tort reform" in Texas, it is likely doctors who are unable to maintain licenses/hospital privileges in other states will come to Texas to practice. Only time will tell if Texas has fallen victim to its own laws. Doctor Accused of Medical Malpractice DisappearsAn Arizona liposuction doctor whose license was recently revoked after three people died during or after procedures has apparently disappeared. Dr. Peter Normann is currently under investigation by police in relation to the deaths and is facing lawsuits by the families of two patients who died under his care. Normann has failed respond to several court filings or to appear for a deposition. Michael Clancy, Arizona Republic 10/29/2007

Good news! If you work
more than 40 hours per
week and make less than
$455 per week ($23,660
per year), then you might
have gained new rights to
overtime pay. A new law
took effect on August 23,
2004 expanding overtime
rights to more workers.
Under the old law,
employers used to avoid
paying overtime by
labeling their employees
as entry level managers
and paying them at least
$250 per week. That low
threshold had not changed
