Colorado Springs Police Officers Recover $5.25 Million
Colorado Springs police officers who claimed they were forced to work off-the-clock will receive $5.25 million as part of proposed settlement with the city. Under the settlement, the city will also put procedures in place to prevent officers from being forced to work overtime without pay. The settlement is expected to be approved early next month. $100 Million Awarded Against Starbucks
A California judge has ruled that Starbucks Corp. must pay baristas in that state more than $100 million for forcing them to share tips with shift supervisors. San Diego Superior Court Judge Patricia Cowett also found that state law prohibits managers and supervisors from profiting from employee gratuities and issued an injunction to stop the practice. $19 Million Awarded in Birth Injury Case
A New Jersey jury has ordered an obstetrician to pay more than $19 million to a boy who was born with severe brain damage and cerebral palsy. Jurors found that Aravind Palav was negligent for failing to provide an acceptable standard of care during the delivery of the boy. An attorney for Palav said they plan to pursue a new trial. Spiriva Linked to Stroke Risk
Health regulators announced Tuesday that a widely marketed drug inhaler may increase the risk of stroke. The Food and Drug Administration said that although stroke risk associated with Pfizer Inc. and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical Inc's lung drug Spiriva is not conclusive it was important to notify doctors and patients about potential problems. Spiriva, which is marketed in the United States by Pfizer, is used to treat breathing problems associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. HCA Settles Suits
The nation's largest for-profit hospital company and one of its former subsidiaries have agreed to settle 70 malpractice lawsuits filed against a former doctor. The settlement between plaintiffs and the Hospital Corporation of America Inc. and Putnam General Hospital will not affect pending lawsuits against the doctor, John Anderson King.
