$78.5 Million Recovered in Whistleblower Suit

The U.S. Government will recover $78.5 million to settle a Qui Tam action over recruiter pay practices. The University of Phoenix's parent company settled the False Claims Act suit that was brought by a group of former employees in 2003. The plaintiffs theory was that the University wrongly rewarded enrollment counselors largely on enrollment numbers, bilking the government out of millions of dollars. $89 Million Awarded in Drunk Driving Case

A jury has awarded the family of a drunk driving victim $89 million. The driver was driving on a partially suspended license due to a previous drunk driving accident. Walmart Settles Overtime Suit

Wal-Mart will pay $40 million to settle a collective action suit that accused the retailer of violating the FLSA. The settlement could cover as many as 87,500 former and current employees who were denied meal breaks, overtime pay and other wages. Dave Copeland, Boston Globe 12/03/2009
