Elderly Men Should Avoid PSA Test

Federal researchers now say that elderly men should now forgo a commonly used blood test used to screen for prostate cancer. In an update, released Tuesday, the 16-member U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said that the benefits of the prostate-specific antigen were unclear and often led to unnecessary anxiety, surgery and complications for men age 75 and older. Among the problems cited by task force were false positive tests that resulted in high stress, unnecessary surgical biopsies and potentially dangerous surgical complications.
