$3 Million Awarded to Paraplegic Woman
A Kentucky jury has ordered a physician in a medical malpractice case to pay more than $3 million to a woman who was left paraplegic and mildly brain damaged after a routine heart procedure. Jurors found that Dr. Michael Sekela was 31 percent responsible for improperly attaching a hose that helps pump blood and oxygen during surgery. Other defendants in the case, Fresenius Medical Care and Central Kentucky Anesthesia, had already reached settlements with the plaintiff. Brandon Ortiz, Lexington Herald-Leader 10/08/2008
