NFL Lawsuit: Former players sue over brain injury risks
NFL lawsuit: 75 former players suing the league over concealing concussion risksThe NFL has been named in a lawsuit for allegedly concealing the risks of concussions. The suit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleges that the NFL has known about the chronic, long-term effects of game-related concussions and intentionally concealed the information for almost 100 years.
In the suit, players claim that the NFL knew but did not acknowledge that concussions can lead to dementia, memory loss, and other symptoms until June of last year. Riddell, the helmet manufacturer, is also named in the lawsuit.
Some of the former players filing include:
- former Dolphins receiver Mark Duper,
- former Giants and Cardinals running back Ottis Anderson,
- and former Giants running back Rodney Hampton.
Players claim they suffered injuries as a result of multiple concussions and they are suing the NFL for fraud, negligence and failure to warn. They are seeking unspecified damages.
Brain injuries
Traumatic brain injuries can occur when sudden trauma occurs to the head. There are three types of traumatic brain injuries one may suffer from:
- Closed Brain Injury - When a blunt object strikes the head, or the head is violently jerked, causing the brain to smack against the skull
- Open Brain Injury - When a sharp object pierces the skull and punctures the brain. Brain injuries of this nature are particularly dangerous as foreign objects can invade the brain and cause infection
- Oxygen Deprivation - When brain cells die due to the brain being deprived of oxygen.
