$35 million personal injury verdict upheld
Court upholds $35 million personal injury verdict for highway patrol officer struck during traffic stop
A California Highway Patrol officer was awarded a $35 million verdict in a personal injury case when he was struck by a motorist during a traffic stop. A judge has thrown out the defense's motions for a new trial.
Anthony Pedeferri, the CHP officer, was left paralyzed in 2007 after a motorist, Jeremy White, veered off Highway 101 near Faria Beach and struck Pedeferri and the vehicle he had pulled over for a routine traffic stop. The driver of the pulled-over vehicle, Rolando Parra, was killed. The driver who struck Pedeferri and the other driver was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2008 for his role in the accident.
Pedeferri and Parra's family filed a lawsuit against White. They also filed against the owners of Bert's Mega Mall in Covina. This business sells motorcycles and off-road vehicles and the families sued the company because White was driving from Covina with two motorcycles he had purchased from Bert's, where employees at Bert's strapped the motorcycles onto White's truck.
This is Ventura County's largest personal injury verdict to date.
