Driver killed in Metro bus crash near Texas Medical Center

Metro bus crash kills driver; Crash splits Metro bus in half near Texas Medical Center and Highway 288

The driver of a Metro accordion-style bus was killed this morning after the bus crashed into a concrete overpass support in the median of the freeway near Old Spanish Trail and Highway 288.

News agencies have reported that the bus apparently made contact with a nearby dump truck, lost control and then crashed into a train overpass support, splitting the bus in half. Metro officials said the bus driver, who was returning to the bus yard after his shift ended, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

No passengers were on board the bus at the time of the crash, officials said. The dump truck driver was not injured. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. According to a Metro spokesperson, the accordion bus, known as an "articulated bus," was one of three in service by the transit authority and Metro says it was phasing out the articulated buses for maintenance reasons.
