BP Has Deadliest Refineries in America

Refineries operated by oil giant BP remain the deadliest in the nation, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle. Since 2005, 20 workers have been killed at BP refineries, including 18 who died at the company's Texas City plant. Nine workers have died at 146 other refineries during the same time period. $10 Million Awarded to Woman Struck by Bus

Jurors have ordered the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to pay $10 million to a woman who was struck by an out of control bus while waiting at a stop. Louise Scialdone requires around-the-clock care for brain and other injuries, her attorney said. MBTA attorneys are said to be reviewing the verdict for a possible appeal. Johnson & Johnson and Novartis AG's Sandoz Unit Recall Pain Patches

A unit of Johnson & Johnson has recalled a version of one of its painkilling patches (Duragesic) after discovering leaks that could result in fatal overdoses. The recall covers patches distributed in the United States and Canada that release 25 micrograms of fentanyl, a powerful painkiller, in an hour. Jury Awards Almost $4 Million in Failure to Diagnose Cancer Case

A Pennsylvania jury has ordered a doctor to pay almost $4 million after finding that he was partially negligent for failing to diagnose a woman's cancer. According to the lawsuit, Dr. Joseph M. Skutches failed to pursue a traditional course of treatment after Barbara Glasgow complained to him about a painful lump in her breast. Imperial Sugar Refinery Had Previous Explosion

A Georgia sugar refinery that was the scene of a blast that killed nine people experienced a small explosion weeks earlier, according to a federal investigator. The previous explosion was caused by the accumulation of dust in a piece of safety equipment, Stephen Selk of the Chemical Safety Board said. It remains unclear whether the earlier explosion may have contributed to the second blast. AP, The New York Times 02/18/2008

Sprint Nextel Corp. Faces Claims for Unpaid Commissions

Sprint Nextel Corp. failed to pay more than $5 million in commissions, a possible class action lawsuit claims. According to the complaint, a computer system malfunction caused workers to lose between $100 and $500 in earned commissions. The lawsuit was filed by four current and former sales clerks who worked in Sprint stores in Louisiana but could cover more than 1,000 individuals if certified as a class action. A representative for Smithfield Packing Company maintains that workers were fully paid for job duties. A Connecticut jury has awarded $38.5 million in damages to the family of a boy who was born with cerebral palsy. Jurors found that Dr. Corrinne De Cholnoky was negligent for waiting to order a Caesarean section to untangle the boy's umbilical cord, which was impeding blood flow to his brain. The award is believed to be the largest medical malpractice verdict in state history.
