Full Insurance Coverage does not Mean You Are Protected Against Uninsured Motorists

Texas Drivers: 20 percent of Texas drivers are uninsured motorists. Full coverage does not mean you are protected - Find out the Two Insurance Types that will Provide you Coverage against Uninsured Motorists

There are thousands of auto accidents and trucking accidents in Texas every year and many drivers in Texas may be under the assumption that full coverage protects any accident scenario. As a Texas driver, you should be aware that just because your insurance is full coverage does not mean you are fully protected.

But I have full coverage!

If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist, even full coverage may not protect you. A recent caller to our office asked if his auto insurance would cover his medical bills when the driver that hit him did not carry any insurance. He said he had "full coverage" and thought that meant his medical bills would be covered. Unfortunately, many Texas drivers may be under this assumption.

Like most drivers, the caller thought that "full coverage" includes everything, but in reality the term "full coverage" only means comprehensive, collision and liability coverage. Comprehensive coverage covers the property damage to your car for incidents such as vandalism, theft, flood, hail and fire damage. Collision coverage only covers repairs to your car for any kind of collision including single-car accidents. Liability covers someone else's property damage and injuries if you are deemed at fault for the accident.

Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

There are two types of insurance that will protect you against uninsured motorists. Uninsured Motorist/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) are not included in "full coverage," but you should always ask your agent for UM/UIM and PIP coverage since it is better to be safe than sorry in the event you are hit by an uninsured motorist.

About twenty percent of all Texas drivers do not have any insurance to protect you if they injure you in a wreck. If you have any questions about UIM or PIP insurance you can fill out our contact form to send us your question.
