Honda Civic Recall and new regulations for diabetes drug Avandia

Consumer product recalls and updates: 2010 Honda Civic Recall; New restrictions for diabetes drug Avandia

Honda to recall 2012 Civics - Fuel line defect may cause leak

Honda Motor Co. has had to recall over 1,000 new Civics because of a manufacturing error that may cause a fuel leak. Most of the recall affects vehicles that have not yet been sold to the public.

The 2012 Civic went on sale this spring and the recall affects 1,156 vehicles. No accidents or fires have been reported because of the issue and the company has stated it will repair the fuel line for free on recalled vehicles that have been sold.

Avandia - Starting in November, drug will be available only by prescription

Avandia was approved over a decade ago to lower blood-sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. But studies have claimed the drug leads to a greater heart attack risk for people with type 2 diabetes and the FDA has imposed new restrictions for this drug.

In November, only certified doctors will be allowed to prescribe the drug. The new restrictions place limits on prescriptions to patients who:

  • have already been informed of the risks,
  • who have been safely treated with it before, and
  • those whose blood sugar cannot be controlled with other medications

In 2010, almost half a million people in the U.S. filled prescriptions for Avandia and related products.
