Metal hip implants were marketed as longer-lasting alternatives than implants made from synthetic materials. But after almost two years, nothing can hide the fact that Johnson & Johnson sold a product that is now being considered one of the most expensive medical device failures in U.S. history.
A report in Reuters stated that 500,000 U.S. patients have received metal hip implants, and a wave of lawsuits began over the ASR implants after reports of high failure rates, dislocation, pain and swelling, and even metallosis. The DePuy recall two years ago reportedly cost $3 billion.
Pinnacle hips reportedly have similar symptoms of ASR implants
Another wave of lawsuits pending in the court system against Johnson & Johnson is over Pinnacle hip systems, with reports of the same issues affecting Pinnacle patients as those who had ASR implants. An orthopedic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, said that this is only the tip of the iceberg in regards to metal-on-metal failures.
Thousands of lawsuits are pending in U.S. courts due to patients' negative experiences of these hip replacements. The symptoms include dislocation, pain and swelling in the hip area, and more symptoms.
ASR & Pinnacle patients have rights to file claims for compensation
