Most cities would welcome an increase in jobs and oil production, but for several Texas counties the growth brought by an energy boom in recent years has created a dilemma for drivers. Eagle Ford shale is a rock formation found in many south Texas counties including Karnes, LaSalle, and Dallas County. Oil and gas companies have found pools of oil and natural gas in the areas and wasted no time in setting up shop.
As a result, a stretch of road that used to be part of a quiet town on Texas 239 southeast of Kenedy is now known as the "death trap." This is because the huge spike in trucks and oil tankers rumbling down the roads has sharply increased the number of crash fatalities.
Chronicle article highlights spike in traffic fatalities in Texas town
The Chronicle reports that fatal traffic accidents have spiked across the counties in the Eagle Ford Shale areas and the biggest jump involves commercial vehicles. LaSalle County has had a 418% increase in commercial crashes since 2008, and McMullen County has had a 1,050% increase, according to a Texas Department of Transportation analysis.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, highway accidents were the leading cause of death for oil field workers between 2003 and 2008. Fatigued drivers and driver error are part of the problem causing the increase in crash fatalities. Some oil workers have been involved in crashes where the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The boom shows no signs of stopping either, as predictions for next year put the growth to at least 20,000 to 30,000 people. Meetings are being held in order to secure how the companies and the counties can work together to improve the roads and conditions of the highways.
