Coffee Manufactured in Texas Recalled for Viagra-Like Ingredient

A coffee company based in Texas recently recalled coffee that contained an ingredient similar to an ingredient in Viagra, the erectile dysfunction drug. The coffee, which was manufactured by Bestherbs Coffee LLC, contained desmethyl carbodenafil in the coffee grounds.

According to the FDA, desmethyl carbodenafil is very similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. Desmethyl carbodenafil could interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, which could lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. In addition, the coffee contains undeclared milk, which can be dangerous for people who have an allergy or a severe sensitivity to milk.

The coffee, which was sold under the brand name New Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Since the recall, the company is calling customers by phone. They are being asked to return the coffee for a full refund. Last year, a similar coffee product was also found to contain undeclared desmethyl carbodenafil.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for companies to manufacture products with undeclared ingredients, some of which can be dangerous for consumers. In many cases, the issue is not detected until consumers call the appropriate federal authorities, or until the company issues a voluntary recall. Companies are often scared of the cost and bad publicity associated with recalls.
