Disturbing Numbers of Doctors Getting Away with Sexual Abuse

Comments (0)

The vast majority of doctors are caring people who want the best possible outcome for their patients. However, a national investigation by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution found that an appalling number of doctors are committing sexual misconduct and abuse against their patients. Reporters looked at over 100,000 documents dating back to 1999, and they identified 3,100 doctors who have been publicly disciplined for sexual misconduct. About 2,400 of those were penalized for violations that had to do with patients. Of those 2,400 doctors who were penalized, about half are still practicing.

Sadly, the investigation found that the issue of sexual misconduct in medicine is largely unaddressed. Only 11 states require that hospitals contact the authorities when abuse occurs. Instead of notifying the authorities, it’s common for medical boards to send doctors to therapy and to remove the claims from their records.

It’s important that victims of misconduct by doctors or other medical professionals speak out. One of the best ways to make your voice heard is through a medical malpractice lawsuit. Doctors fear malpractice suits, and they can be one of the most effective ways of making your voice heard. You can also choose to press charges, or to file a lawsuit based on assault.
