General Motors has had a nightmare year this year. They have recalled over 25 million cars, most of which are related to defective ignition switches. The switches have been linked to at least 35 deaths, and many more accidents. After publicly acknowledging the issue with the switches, which GM covered up for years, it had to hastily manufacture new ignition switches for the millions of vehicles that needed the new switches.
However, now the issue is not having the switches ready in time, but instead persuading vehicle owners to bring their cars to the dealership for the replacement switches. GM met its October target of having replacement parts ready for the 1.96 million recalled cars that are still on the highways, but only 55 percent of owners have had the repairs done.
Although there was an initial rush of customers who wanted to get the repairs done, now they have dwindled to a trickle. Many customers who made appointments didn't show up as scheduled. GM sent a barrage of letters and emails to customers, but now is trying to reach owners through Facebook and online Roku games. GM is also now offering a $25 gift card for owners who bring their recalled cars to dealerships by January 1. They pledge to work hard and to be creative in finding the owners and persuading them to bring in their cars for repairs.
