Groups of criminals are targeting Houston drivers in an attempt to force them into an accident, so that the accident “victims” can claim that they were injured and receive insurance money. According to experts from the insurance industry, the criminals will drive two or three cars, and use either cell phones or walkie-talkies to communicate.
The drivers will practice maneuvers that will allow them to trap drivers in situations where it’s almost impossible to avoid an accident. One of the most common scenarios is that several cars will surround a driver. They do it slowly so that the driver does not realize what’s happening. Another car will pull in front of the driver, and slam on his brakes, which causes the victim to rear-end the car in front of him. There are typically four or five people in the car, who will all claim injuries.
Another common scenario is one in which the victim is again casually surrounded by cars driven by the criminals. Then another of the criminals’ cars speeds in next to the front car, swoops over, and takes an exit at the last minute, which causes the front car to slam on its brakes, forcing the victim to rear-end the criminal’s car. When police arrive, the accident victim will admit that he or she saw an unknown car cut off the first car, which may cause the police to not suspect that it was a scam.
Houston is estimated to be number four in the country when it comes to staged accidents. The criminals often pick victims who they believe will be likely to have good insurance, such as mothers with kids in the car, brand new vehicles, or commercial vehicles. If you believe that you were in an accident that was staged, it’s important to let your insurance company know. They will do a very detailed investigation of the accident, which may result in you not facing liability for the accident, as well as the scam artists facing criminal charges.
