A worker in the Heights tragically died after he was run over by a forklift at a construction site. At the time of the accident, the victim was trying to guide the forklift’s driver. The driver lost sight of the victim, who got between the front and back tires of the forklift. According to police, the victim failed to yield the right-of-way to the forklift. Police found that the driver was not impaired, and no charges are expected.

Forklift accidents are unfortunately not uncommon. Forklifts are commonly used at construction sites, factories, warehouses, and other settings. Forklift drivers must receive proper training about the safe operation and loading of a forklift. When a forklift is not properly operated, there is a risk of forklift injuries. Some common types of accidents include striking people with the forklift, setting a load down before checking the area and crushing someone, and dropping a load because it was not properly balanced or on the forks.

Injuries that are caused by forklift accidents are typically severe. This is due to the size and weight of the forklifts. Often, injuries caused by forklifts result in death or permanent injuries or disability. The leading cause of death in forklift fatalities is forklift overturns.

Because of the dangers associated with forklifts, there are a number of statutory requirements that relate to how operators must be trained and how the machines should be operated. Some of the areas that are covered by OSHA regulations include speeding, starting and stopping, turning, reversing, mounting and dismounting, and visibility.
