Brain Injury Attorney FAQs
in Houston, Texas
What are some symptoms of a traumatic brain injury (TBI)?
There is a very long list of symptoms for TBI, but some of the most common are headache, nausea, cognitive problems, concentration and memory problems, lethargy, depression, a change in personality, difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much. Some people with very serious brain injuries will suffer seizures.
How is a brain injury typically caused?
TBI occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue.
Will the effects of a TBI be evident immediately?
Not necessarily, and this is why TBI's are so difficult to detect and diagnose. Some of the symptoms of TBI can also be symptoms of other conditions, and sometimes no symptoms whatsoever are apparent immediately. If you or a loved one suffers even a mild concussion, you should seek medical attention immediately as testing will be necessary to assess the amount of damage done to the head and brain.
Is there treatment for traumatic brain injury?
Because little can be done to reverse the initial brain damage caused by trauma, medical personnel try to stabilize someone with TBI and focus on preventing further damage. Patients with mild to moderate injuries may receive skull and neck x-rays to check for bone fractures or spinal instability. For moderate to severe TBI cases, CT scans are necessary. Treatment programs involving physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, and psychological treatment are often necessary.
Can TBI victims recover?
Disabilities resulting from TBI depend upon the severity of the injury, the location of the injury, and the age/general health of the victim. Some long-term disabilities that are possible are cognitive problems, memory problems, sensory processing, communication, and behavior problems. Some TBI victims remain in comas and vegetative states for quite some time, even indefinitely.
How many people die as a result of a TBI?
The death rate for traumatic brain injury is 30 per 100,000. Of those who die, 50% do so within the first two hours of their injury. Sadly, an estimated 50,000 people in the United States die each year from traumatic brain injury.
Who can I sue following my TBI?
Who can be sued following your injury is something that you will need to discuss with the experienced brain injury attorneys at Kennedy Hodges, L.L.P., but generally speaking, you may be able to sue the party deemed responsible for your injury. For instance, if you were in a car accident and the other driver was at fault or was drunk or otherwise impaired, you may be able to sue the at-fault driver. Or, if you were working on a construction site and fell off an unsecured scaffold, then your employer may be held responsible for your TBI. Each case of TBI varies; we will be happy to discuss your case with you during your initial consultation.
