A five-year-old Harris County girl remains in a coma after being hit by a drunk driver two weeks ago. The girl was riding in a car being driven by her aunt when the car was struck. The accident occurred on I-45 south at Louetta Road. The impact caused both cars to flip.

The car that hit the girl’s vehicle was being driven by a 22-year-old. He has been charged with intoxication assault and was released on bond. He is scheduled to appear in court in March. The five--year-old has had one surgery and is scheduled to have more but remains in a coma.

This tragic accident is an example of how dangerous drinking and driving is. Despite decades of education about the dangers of drinking and driving that has been aimed at the public, almost 40 percent of all traffic fatalities involve a driver who is under the influence of alcohol. Over 10,000 people a year are killed in accidents because of drunk driving.

Drunk drivers usually face criminal charges when they are caught driving under the influence, particularly if they are involved in an accident in which someone is hurt. They can also be held civilly liable in court if they are to blame for a car accident, regardless of whether they received a citation for drinking and driving. An experienced Houston drunk driving injury attorney can help build a strong case proving the drunk driver’s negligence by using police reports, eyewitness accounts, and expert testimony.
