Houston Birth Injuries

Comments (0)

Thousands of babies are born in Texas each year, especially as the population continues to grow. Because of the advances in modern medicine over the last several decades, the vast majority of these babies are born healthy. Ultrasounds, amniocenteseBirth Injury Images.jpgs and other tests can detect whether any potential problems could occur during birth. However, traumas and injuries do sometimes occur during childbirth.

There are several conditions that could cause birth injuries. Babies who are not situated correctly inside the womb at the time of the birth could be injured. A woman with a pelvis that isn't the correct shape or size may have a difficult birth. Babies who are very small could be injured during birth due to their fragility. Very large babies could also have problems during childbirth.

There are several types of childbirth injuries. Most involve injuries to the brain or head. Some babies experience bruising and swelling, but suffer no permanent injuries. In rare cases a baby could experience a skull fracture or bleeding in the brain during birth. Sometimes nerve injuries occur during birth, but these often heal quickly. In some rare cases, bones are broken during childbirth, but they usually heal quickly and do not lead to permanent problems.

Usually, the worst injury a baby can suffer during birth occurs because of a lack of oxygen. Some infants are actually asphyxiated during birth. Others may experience a lack of oxygen but suffer no permanent damage. Some infants may have very mild brain damage or even a severe problem like cerebral palsy because of a lack of oxygen.

In some cases, the obstetrician or other medical professional is not responsible for the birth injury. However, in other cases the doctor is responsible. A doctor who doesn't follow the appropriate standards of care during childbirth can be held legally responsible for any injuries.
