Last week, five automakers widened recalls of cars and trucks with Takata airbags. Late last month, Takata announced a recall of 34 million vehicles in the U.S. due to their defective airbags, which is the largest recall in American history. The airbags are at risk of exploding with too much force and throwing metal fragments inside the car. The defect has caused six deaths.
The automakers which expanded their recalls include Chrysler, Ford, Honda, BMW, and Mistubishi. Nissan has announced that it will not expand its recall of cars equipped with Takata airbags.
A hearing will take place in Congress this week on the Takata safety issue. Lawmakers have complained that both Takata and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have mishandled the airbag safety issue. The panel will hear from the head of the NHTSA, the Vice President of Takata, two leaders of automaker lobbying groups, and the director of an independent testing organization.
Takata originally recalled a smaller number of vehicles only in more humid regions of the U.S. It’s believed that the cause of the issue is related to humidity. A former engineer has told Congress he is willing to testify that he warned of deadly consequences before the company chose a design for the air bags that have recently been recalled. He left the company in 1999 because it disregarded his warnings. He said he knew there were going to be failures, and he didn’t want to be associated with them.
Unfortunately, many companies choose not to take the advice of experts, and end up making dangerous products that harm consumers. In some cases, even after the company knows that they have manufactured a dangerous product, the company will refuse to issue a recall.
