Pedestrian Killed in Houston Accident with Truck

A pedestrian was killed in an accident involving a city truck earlier this week. The woman was struck by a City of Houston solid waste truck in the 6800 block of Gessner at Bellaire. The truck driver was travelling northbound on S. Gessner and made an illegal right turn onto Bellaire, where the truck hit the pedestrian. The victim died at the scene. No charges have yet been filed against the driver.

When the truck driver hit the woman, she did not realize she had hit anyone and did not stop. She only stopped later when another driver flagged her down. She was cooperative with police. Police are currently hoping to speak to the driver who flagged the woman down, as well as any other witnesses. They are also seeking to find any surveillance videos of the scene.

This accident was tragic and undoubtedly devastating for the victim’s family, but it was not unusual. Over 150,000 pedestrians are treated in emergency rooms each year after being struck by vehicles. About 5,000 pedestrians are killed in traffic accidents each year, on average. Most pedestrians who are killed in accidents die from head injuries. The next most common type of serious injuries in pedestrian accidents are injuries to the chest, abdomen, and extremities. Many pedestrian accidents are the results of drivers failing to yield. About half of all pedestrian accidents involve vehicles that are turning, as occurred in this case.
