The two age groups most at risk of mistaken gas pedal accidents

Comments (0)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) commissioned a study that found that gas pedal accidents occur more frequently among two specific age groups. Not too surprisingly, drivers over age 76 and under 20 were most at risk of these types of accidents.

The study also showed that two-thirds of all gas pedal accidents involved female drivers. These figures stand in contrast to the general trend, as around 60% of drivers involved in car accidents are male.

One theory for the number of accidents in the specific age groups is that the parts of the brain that are required for driving are not developed fully in teen drivers, and older drivers are more likely to score poorly on attention, organizing and planning tests.

Mistaken gas pedal accidents

These types of accidents are not uncommon, and in one case several years ago an 86-year-old driver put his foot on the gas pedal instead of the brake and lost control, smashing into an open air market in Santa Monica, California, killing 10 people and injuring 63.
