In life or death moments, patients have no choice but to trust their doctors, and ultimately, the medical equipment and devices they use. So when Bard IVC filters were implanted into hundreds of patients, many just assumed that they would be safe. Unfortunately, they were not.
The Victims of the Bard IVC Filters
Used to prevent blood clots from entering the lungs, inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are inserted into the vena cava to capture the dangerous clots. In theory, this method should work, but because of a dangerous and flawed device made by C.R. Bard, some of the patients lost their lives, while the safety of hundreds of others have been put in jeopardy. Here, we look at four of the Bard IVC filter victims:
- Dodi Froehlich required a filter after a car accident put her at risk for developing a clot. Four months after the filter was inserted, a sharp metal piece fractured off and pierced her heart. Froehlich needed emergency open-heart surgery to repair the problem.
- Lisa Davis claims that the Bard G2 filter that was implanted in her had also fractured, and is the cause of her serious health problems, including arrhythmia. Davis alleges she’ll need to take anticoagulation medication for the rest of her life because of the fracture, and also takes medicine to control the arrhythmia.
- In a lawsuit, Kevin Phillips alleged that the Recovery IVC filter had fractured and perforated his heart. Phillips had to endure open-heart surgery and an extensive recovery period.
- Gloria Adams received a Recovery filter after she suffered from a brain aneurysm. A week after the filter was implanted, a blood clot pushed it into Adams’ heart, causing her death.
